Magic

Magic, once invoked, has the ability to manipulate natural forces. A spell, the most basic unit of magic, is an invocation that accomplishes a specific change. A spell can be simple or complex, depending on the degree of change the spell caster is attempting to accomplish.

Magic is not known to be present or common on worlds other then Etheria; other natural forces do exist, such as gravitation and electromagnetism, but magic is the only force that appears to be controllable through will alone.

Magic on Etheria is manipulated through a system of rituals. These rituals restrain and provide order and direction to what would ordinarily be a chaotic force. Witches invoke magic through the use of gestures, incantations, enchanted objects, potions, and elixirs. Witches require extensive education and training in order to master the system, allowing them to use magic effectively and safely. This training is accomplished at institutions such as Hexside School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and Glandus Highschool. Students start training in magic at the kindergarten level and continue to develop their skills across the educational spectrum. As witches pursue their educations, they are guided down academic tracks leading to eventual coven membership and magic specialization.

Known Magic Sources:

Bile sacs
The most common source of magic used on Etheria, witches and biped demons can cast spells through a sac of magic bile attached to their hearts. Each bile sac contains different spell phlegms that can be mixed together to create different spells, and thanks to this natural magic reservoir, witches can cast a variety of spells just by drawing a Spell Circle. Because bile sacs contain magic, witches can still do magic on other worlds that has no natural magic. It is suggested, however, that this wasn't always the case, and it is implied that ancient witches did not use bile sacs for magic.

Glyph magic:
The four glyphs: fire, light, plant, and ice.

References to "wild magic" witches used in ancient times, has suggested the existence of a magic system utilized by witches in the past without bile sacs. This archaic magic appears to rely on runes called glyphs or picto-glyphs that invoke magic when drawn. These glyphs briefly appear in the spell circles of other witches, but have long become invisible to them.

Currently, there are four confirmed glyphs: light, ice, plant, and fire. While it is implied that these are the only four glyphs in existence, there are infinitely many ways to combine the existing glyphs to create more complex spells. However, complex spells require the glyphs to be arranged in specific patterns; attempting to overlap glyphs can cause undesired results. Performing glyph magic effectively requires that both the glyph is drawn accurately enough and that the caster know what they need the glyph to do when they activate it, or else they will receive underwhelming and unintended results. Unlike bile sacs, glyphs do not contain their own magic; rather, they command the natural magic on Etheria, rendering them useless in any realm/world with no magic. Glyph magic is usable by anyone. The glyphs are like words which command the environment's magic to cast spells; overlapping glyphs is like overlapping words and drawing glyphs with random parts together is like using random letters to come up with a word: it just makes a jumbled mess.

Glyphs when drawn on paper consume the paper they are drawn on, but if drawn on something larger like the ground or a wall will not consume it, and instead the glyph itself will simply disappear. They have harmful effects if drawn or tattooed onto a living being due to glyphs requiring energy to cast spells.

Staffs and wands
Besides glyphs and bile sacs, witches can also use specific tools to aid in spellcasting. Palismen, and by extension, the staffs they turn into, contain their own magic source that is separate from the magic of a witch's bile sac. Therefore, powerless witches can cast spells using staffs.

A wand was a quasi-sentient magical instrument through which a witch channeled their magical powers to centralize the effects for more complex results. Most spells were cast with the aid of wands, but spells could be cast without the use of wands. Like staffs wands to not require the use of a bile sac to work. Meaning anyone can use a wand to preform magic. However the spells won't be as power or deep as spells preformed by witches.

Each wand consisted of a specific type of wood that surrounded a core of magical substance. Although the wand cores might come from the same creature, or the wood might come from the same tree, no two existing wands were exactly alike. The study of the history and the magical properties of wands was called "Wandlore". Wands were often buried along or burned when their owner died or pasted down to the original owners offspring in a ritual called "Wand Passing".

Artificial Magic
A relatively unknown source of magic used by Etherian Minister of Magic; Emperor Belos. Artificial magic relies more on advanced scientific technology over natural sources. Supposedly, Emperor Belos learned how to harness this form of magic with the help of the Collector. It is notably effective against the magic-blocking wool, suggesting that artificial magic is a separate force from natural magic. Artificial magic is primarily red and allows its user to perform powerful spells without the need of spell circles.

History of Magic in LV

Sunsper, Ataraxia, and Etheria are the 3 planets that are known in the universe for having magic. Etheria being the most known and the main planet known for magic.

Sunsper: Sunsper is a magically gifted planet with a magic imbedded core. Unlike Etheria, Sunsper does not have naturally magic gifted users, magical planets and animals, or artificial magic such as wands. The only type of magic Sunsper has on it is the elemental Runestones.

The elemental Runestones are believed to be gifts from the gods in an attempt to bless the planet with magic. Another belief is that the Runestones are natural and it was a first come first serve type of deal. Only the O5 Council knows the full truth.

The core of Sunsper it a natural core that you would find, however, in the center their is a heart of magic. For further detail see Project Backlight.
In summary, Sunsper's core is a heart of magic surrounded by a average planetary core.

Once Catrin Howlett came to Sunsper he brough magic with. He started a line of magical users. A specialize school was opened on Sunsper to teach those who could do magic. Once Etheria joined the Planetary Union, a trade was set up to help provide Sunsper with magic. NextGen Industries is currently working to mix magic and natural life to Sunsper to help preserve the "Paradise Planet" title the rest of the galaxy has given it.

Etheria: Etheria is the main source and planet of magic in the entire galaxy. It has ever magic planet, object, and entity logged by the Life Foundation and the Planetary Union.

Taking place before the standardization of magical practice, the Savage Ages were permeated with "wild magic". The Savage Ages are a controversial point in Etherian' history: on one hand, polite society derides the Ages as a period of chaos and disunity, hence the epoch's accepted name; on the other hand, dissidents under the coven system consider the end of the Savage Ages to be the beginnings of a tyrannical institution.

Magic was standardized once Emperor Belos created the Coven System and united Etheria under 1 name. This taught witches to learn magic safely and without trouble, it also taught history of Etheria and taught hoe to handle creatures and safely pick plants from the Ground.

Magic on Etheria is divided into 4 covens: Stardust, Vortex, Nebula, and Solar. Each student at any magical school is divided into 1 of the 4 covens once they finish preschool and learn the basics of magic. After this, they spend the next 7 years learning these types of magic along with personal studies of any magic allowed by Emperor Belos. While he does allow the learning of more dark magic such as procession or memory viewing, he reserves it for those in advanced magical learning their final year.

Atarxia: The only magic found on this planet is natural magic and elemental magic. The natural magic found on Ataraxia is objects like crystals and plants that can be brewed into potions. The only other magic found on Ataraxia is elemental magic which is harnessed by users and they train to use it. It's simple magic that is passed down and learned. These are the only sources of magic on Ataraxia.

School System

Etheria, Ataraxia, and Sunsper all have magical schools that are overseen by Emperor Belos. The most known schools are:

Hexside School of Witchcraft and Wizardry,
Glandus Highschool of Magial Arts,
St. Epiderm School of Witchcraft and Demonics,
Hogwarts School of Magial Development,
Galactic Highschool of Celestial Magic.

Each of these schools is funded by Emperor Belos except for Galactic High which is funded by an offshore magical system on LV 561 - Sunsper. Each of these schools use the coven system developed by Emperor Belos.

Each school follows the same yearly development: Kindergarten is when young witches first learn how to use magic. The next few years are all about learning the basic of magic and being sorted into your coven for the rest of the school years. 1 Years - 7 Years learn magic attached to their coven and start learning about all magic. 7 Years, if in advanced magical learning, spend their time learning magic of their choosing. Any type of magic that is allowed. Once student's complete their 7th year they are free to take any type of path they like.

Magical law is different on Sunper. It doesn't fully follow Emperor Belos' control as it does on Etheria. Magic on Sunsper is managed by the Life Foundation. Basic Sunsper laws have been put into action. However a magical offense would end up falling into the hands of the Foundation rather then just a plain court case. Emperor Belos still has little say but not all of it.
